Bah, humbug!

Call me jaded, but for me, Christmas has always felt like an exercise in learning to cope with disappointment. First there’s the stress of shopping for the perfect presents, then you kill yourself over a hot oven cooking all the right dishes because you’re so convinced that if you don’t make a twice-baked goat’s cheese soufflé then NO ONE is going to have a good time. On the day, you skilfully navigate your way through a series of family arguments, only to have the pleasure of trying to mask your horror as you open up gift after gift which are all lovely, but leave you wondering if your loved ones know who the hell you are at all. Last year the thought of Christmas filled me with such dread that I jetted off to Vietnam instead, not returning until all the decorations had been put away and I’d safely rung in the New Year.
