Aubrey Plaza: funny person
Newsflash: Aubrey Plaza is our new girl crush. Funny as hell and gorgeous to boot, she's not only scored a role on Amy Poehler's Parks and Recreation, she's also starring in Judd Apatow's Funny People as an up-and-coming comedian. It's big news for the young comedian, who admits she was waitressing this time last year.
So Judd Apatow asked you to do a lot of stand-up to prepare for your role - is that right? [yes] when I got offered the part. He wanted me to be there a month before we filmed because he wanted me to be doing stand up with the rest of the cast, so he threw me into it immediately. The third gig I ever did was at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. I thought there was no way I would do anything because these were paying people and Judd told me I would be going on after Adam and then he walked away. I was backstage and I almost cried. I was having a meltdown and I was looking at Adam and he was nervous and I’m thinking Adam is nervous and he went on and did 20 minutes and he killed and I’m thinking the whole time – they are going to hate me but I didn’t totally bomb that night and I think that was a turning point for me and I knew I could keep going.
So Judd was filming backstage as well? He was using multiple cameras – I was so scared when he shot my first stand up. I was freaking out and there were cameras backstage too – so everything was documented. He would send the camera crew to every show I did, even if it was a small open mike that I did to practice he would send a camera crew and I would bomb and they filmed that and then they would interview me after it – it’s all there. He is really obsessed with documenting everything. That’s what makes the film so special – because he wanted to make it so real, and he wanted us to be really in that world and not fake it – no fake laughs. I do one joke in the movie. It was one joke but hours and months of doing it every night went into that.
Are you going to continue with stand up? Yes I was one of the only people that really liked it. Seth and Jonah hated it. Everyone was pacing back and forth – they were all saying why do I have to do this? And Jonah was like “I will never do that again.”
Did you have to write your own jokes? I wrote all my own but my character in the movie is not supposed to be a well-established comedian. I’m struggling with my persona which was true in real life so I think Judd liked that. The line was very blurred – not playing myself, but I was going through the same thing. She was also a modern girl while Seth’s character is the old fashioned boy.
Did you like that? She is unique in that way. She really stands up for herself. I’m just so lucky to be playing a comedian and someone who was not just the cute girl next door who has no personality but the guy falls in love with her anyway. In this movie Judd wanted to see why we would like each other and see that I was just as funny as them, and that’s why he would like me.
Your character is from Delaware. Is that taken from real life? I was born in Delaware. Judd liked that I was from Delaware in real life so he wanted to keep that. I guess because no one is from Delaware. Every time people ask me where I’m from – it’s the same reaction. There are not a lot of people from Delaware. It’s only a small sliver of a state.
Is your family happy about your success? I have two younger sisters and they are so excited – they can’t believe it happened so fast. There was a cardboard cut out from the movie and in my hometown and I got all these emails of people taking pictures with their arm around me, so it’s surreal for everyone. Delaware people are thrilled – because I talk about Delaware and I’m from there. Want to win a copy of Funny People on DVD? Click here!
