Top of the crops
Trimming and shaving luscious locks to the point of no return has been a big hit in Hollywood of late (Britney must have started something) and some of the hairstyles sported recently have been massive hits. We have a look at how the chop has boosted (or killed off) these celebrity careers.

Emma Watson -
The most recent Hollywood crop. Emma debuted her new pixie cut via Twitter last week, saying it was “the most liberating thing ever”. We’re yet to see if this new look will pay off for Emma, who is the face of Burberry and of course, Hermione in Harry Potter, but it looks as though Emma is ready to grow up. -
Natalie Portman -
Not one to shy away from a gritty, edgy role, Portman had her head shaved to play the role of a prisoner in the political film V for Vendetta. The chop paid off as the worldwide box office reached over $132 million, and cemented her role as a serious actress. -
Britney Spears -
Miss Spears famously shaved her own head in 2007 during a major meltdown. The jury is out on whether it “helped” her career, but it certainly got her a lot of press! These days Brit is normally seen sporting some ratty extensions, and while they might look out of place on a Pantene commercial, we think it’s a much better look than her bare head. -
Victoria Beckham -
Posh Spice has sported a whole bunch of different looks over the years. Long extensions, "The Pob", and there was even a time when she had a genuine pixie crop. Luckily for her, she seems to suit anything and we can definitely say that her hair changes have boosted her career no end. If you have a hairstyle named after you, you know you’re doing something right! -
Carey Mulligan -
Carey Mulligan appeared in An Education with long dark hair, but her profile has really taken off since cutting it short and dying it blonde. -
Hayden Panettiere -
20-year-old Hayden has had a variety of hairstyles, from long and wavy to a short bob, and now a pixie cut! Hayden is happy with the chop, saying, “I love it - it's daring and it's easier for me. You always try and find your own sense of style, so when I chopped my hair off I felt like I was my own self my own way”. -
Rihanna -
From Barbados beauty to edgy undercut, Rihanna’s hair transformations get shorter and shorter each time. She’s now sporting shaved sides and a serious red mohawk, but we think it suits her. -
Agyness Deyn -
She’s known for her androgynous look and the boy-short, peroxide-blonde hair that shot her to fame, but Agyness has drifted a little out of the limelight since she was seen sporting a brunette buzz cut. -
Kimberly Stewart -
Her hair was inspired by Rapunzel when she was hanging out with the Hilton sisters a few years back, but now Kimberley is putting on a more serious, grown-up front with her short pixie cut. -
Pixie Geldof -
Her edgy short-cropped hairdo has become a signature look for socialite Pixie Geldof, but she was recently seen sporting some straggly-looking blonde extensions that even Britney Spears would shudder at. -
Amber Rose She’s known for three things – her relationship with Kanye West, her erm, curvaceous body, and of course – her platinum blonde buzz cut. While it’s certainly a bit of a shock, we actually can’t imagine her with any other style, and there’s no denying she stands out from the crowd. -
Solange -
Beyonce’s little sis just can’t seem to step out from the shadows of her successful sibling, and recently shaved her hair for a bit of press. She’s now sporting a mini-fro buzz cut, but we definitely prefer her over-the-top fro or braids. -
Selma Blair -
Selma debuted a dramatic asymmetric crop in 2006 after her divorce, and apparently the star went for the asymmetrical look on a whim. “It reminds me of the silly haircuts I had in 7th grade that made me happy,” explained Blair. Maybe so, but the film offers dried up shortly after. -
Cassie -
R&B singer Cassie (famous for 2006's Me & U) shaved half her hair last year and took to Twitter."Yeah, I did it," the 22-year-old wrote on her Twitter page next to a photo of her partially shaved head. Coincidentally - or not - she just released a new single. Hmm. We smell a publicity stunt. -

The Milkshake singer has a bit of an attitude about celeb haircuts, and insists that Rihanna and Cassie “swagger-jacked” her half-shaven head. “Well I was definitely the first to do it. The only other person I would give credit before me is Pepa. Other than that, I expect them to copy me. What else are they supposed to do? They’re young. God bless them”, she said. With only one or two hits under her belt, it doesn’t seem like someone swagger-jacking Kelis’ haircut can harm her dwindling career.
