How to fix a post-party skin hangover

Sipping champagne and cutting the rug till dawn can leave you with a less-than-lustrous complexion, as your skin will feel as hungover as your body.

"Short-term and long-term, alcohol is a diuretic, as the body responds by losing water content. Once alcohol enters the body, the liver [focuses on] one thing – breaking it down," explains Noella Gabriel, Elemis director of product and treatment development.

"The knock-on effect is that skin is depleted, dehydrated and very toxic. Alcohol can be a direct cause of rosacea and puffy eyes, and the increase of sugars and yeast can create bad acne." So try these tips:

Getting your glow back…

1. Cleanse your face with a creamy, hydrating cleanser.

2. Get rid of any remaining makeup by using a gentle exfoliant on your skin.

3. Massage in a radiance-boosting serum, followed by a rich face cream.

4. Tap on eye gel to soothe tired eyes, and layer on the lipbalm.

5. Pat on an illuminating concealor to hide fatigue.

6. Apply shimmery bronzer to fake good health, even if you feel like death!

Tip: "After a big night out, use a nourishing night moisturiser so skin regenerates," says Gabriel.
