Pigment fixers that actually work
Dark spots leaving your complexion uneven? Alexandra
Clark, True Solutions NSW trainer, has the lowdown on
pigmentation.
What is pigmentation?
Pigment (also referred to as melanin) is the colour of our
skin. Sometimes it's produced in high concentrations, resulting in
dark patches. This hyper-pigmentation is a common concern for
Aussie women, because of our increased sun exposure. Some
medications, genetics and pregnancy can also play a part in causing
these marks and, for some skin types, scars turn into patches of
pigmentation over time.
How can it be avoided and treated?
The best way to avoid sun-induced pigmentation is by using
sunscreen every day. Even if it's not sunny outside, damaging UV
rays can still get to your skin. A daily routine of well-formulated
products with ingredients like vitamin C, coffee berry extract,
licorice, idebenone and vitamin A will help even out your skin
tone. While treating pigmentation, it's important to exfoliate dead
skin cells, revealing the lighter, brighter skin underneath.
Regular peels and light therapy are a must for serious
results.
What kinds of products can be used?
Look for products using words like "lightening" or
"brightening" and which contain antioxidants. Daily antioxidant use
gives us a more even skin tone and colour. Super antioxidants such
as idebenone and coffee berry extract protect our skin from free
radicals and help lighten areas of dark pigment.
Tip: Sun spots caused by too much UV exposure may be
unsightly, but your natural freckles are beautiful. If you've got
them flaunt them!
