Expert Q&A: Samantha Wills
Tell us the story of how you got into jewellery design
and set up your own label…
My interest in jewels all started thanks to my mum, who enrolled
me in a beading course when I was in primary school. Through high
school, all my artworks were embellished, decadent and over the
top. I was just drawn to the "additional", which essentially is
what jewellery is. From then I continued to design and create,
selling jewellery at school and at my mum's boutique until the age
of 21 when I made the move to Sydney to launch the Samantha Wills
brand.
Where do you find inspiration for your
designs?
I'm inspired by learning, by experiencing, by conversations. I'm
inspired by my travels; whether it's an afternoon sunset against
the New York skyline, the Mexican dusk with its soft peachy-blush
shades, or rich Moroccan architecture - I am captured by life's
beauties in general!
What are some popular and elegant bridal-jewellery looks
at the moment?
The best aspect of being a bride is having the creative freedom to
stage your own fairy tale and express your independent style
without the influence of fashion trends. Because of this, bridal
looks are so diverse, which I think is great! But if I had to think
of the most popular, it would be vintage chic, which involves soft
and effortless detailing such as pearl drops or brass-set crystals.
Statement neck collars are also dominating the bridal scene.
What advice would you give brides-to-be when searching
for the perfect big-day accessory look?
Don't be afraid to be different or to use jewellery to bring out
your ensemble. Bright accessories can really add an edge to your
look. But of course, keep in mind that your jewels act as an
accessory to complement your gown and even the theme, so
remembering this before you search for your perfect pieces helps
make the decision easier!
Are there any big no-nos when it comes the wearing
jewellery on your wedding day?
I don't necessarily believe in "no-nos". I think fashion is about
having fun and being comfortable in your own individual style. This
especially applies to your big day! It is the one time you get to
be in full style control and if wearing lots of jewels makes you
happy, then go for it!
But I do think a bride should stay true to her own style on her
wedding day. Your wedding is not the place to try to rock a style
you have wanted to try. You should look like the most beautiful
version of yourself on your wedding day.
