How did you get into wedding photography?
I have always been a photographer with a background in
advertising and magazine and fashion work. I started GM
Photographics 20 years ago and we now shoot around 150 weddings a
year. We have four teams of two photographers, and we are all
highly trained and experienced and awarded. I personally shoot
about 20 weddings a year.
What advice would you give a bride-to-be when she's
choosing a photographer for her wedding?
Look at their website to see if it's the look and feel
that you want, then book in to go and meet them and see their
wedding albums. Good wedding studios have a consistency of style
and product.
What are some of the most memorable locations
you've shot a wedding at?
We shoot a lot at locations like Sergeants Mess, Gunners'
Barracks, Dunbar House and the QVB Tea Rooms, and these venues are
fantastic. All the work is done for the bride and the days run
smoothly and to plan. Dunbar House has a great vintage feel and
faces west so it gets great light and is so close to the water and
very relaxing.
Other favourite spots are Jones Bay wharf and Darling Island,
Catalina and Bathers' Pavilion (I got married there) - lots of
variety for photography and close to the water. Away weddings are
also favourites, like Hamilton Island, Noosa, New York and Asia.
Guests commit to a longer wedding schedule and they run over
several days with lots of activities and fun.
Do you have a favourite wedding photo you've
taken?
I have been using my favourite photo of Sigourney and
Damien in my advertising for several years now. I love
country weddings and this was country and coast at Gerringong. They
were a gorgeous couple madly in love, she had a great Alex Perry
dress and watch out for the cow paddies!
What are some new ideas and techniques that you're seeing
in wedding photography at the moment?
We are seeing more couples wanting to do a pre-wedding
shoot. It's a great ice breaker, getting in front of the camera
with their booked photographer and exploring different locations
that they might want to shoot on their wedding day, or somewhere
entirely different like where they had their first date/kiss
etc.
