The pop princess will appear at the VMAs

Nothing says 'award season' like the unexpected comeback of a pop princess. Well, maybe 'champagne-swilling Oscar de la Renta clad starlet,' but that doesn't really fit the story, does it?

Britney Spears, she of the much-heralded attempted return to glory in 2007, is back to do it all again (insert obvious 'Oops' pun here) on Sunday. Nominated for three MTV Video Music Awards, Britney is also rumoured to be opening the show in Los Angeles.

The slimmed down star says, "MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I'm excited to open the show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated." While the appearance has been confirmed by MTV Networks Music President Van Toffler, it's expected that Britney won't be singing on stage (because, let's face it, we don't want a repeat of last year's 'Gimme More'.)
