When actors play musicians
Universal Pictures are in talks to produce a biopic on Nirvana, and they want Robert Pattinson to play Kurt Cobain (Courtney Love approves!). We think he’d be great – he’s certainly had enough practice playing brooding, tortured souls. Here are nine celebs who have also played musos on the big screen.

2. Scarlett Johansson. Courtney Love wants ScarJo to play her in the upcoming Nirvana biopic. Scarlett would fit right in – she’s no stranger to the music world. Miss Johansson debuted her gravelly voice in her first single “Falling Down”, saying the release of her album was an “intimate experience.” -
3. Kristen Stewart. Another Twilight alumnus, Kristen has just finished filming The Runaways, playing rocker Joan Jett. It appears Kristen is a fan of method acting; she was seen sporting a black mullet, rocker-inspired threads, and even spent New Year’s Eve with Joan herself. -
4. Dakota Fanning. Dakota stars alongside Kristin Stewart for her latest role as Cherie Currie, the lead singer of the all-female rock band The Runaways. -
5. Cate Blanchett. Probably the most bizarre role of all, Cate switched genders to play legendary folk singer Bob Dylan in the biopic I’m Not There. Her amazing performance scored her an Academy Award nomination. -
6. Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin scored some of the best reviews of his career after playing country music legend Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. Ironically, he met Johnny Cash six months prior to even hearing about the film. Must have been an omen! -
7. Val Kilmer. Val starred in the 1991 biopic The Doors, playing the role of lead singer Jim Morrison. Rumour has it that he got so into character that he insisted being called “Jim” on set. -
8. Beyonce. It was a case of art imitating life when the bootylicious songstress/actor played Deena Jones in Dreamgirls, a character loosely based on Motown diva Dianna Ross. While her acting skills didn’t go unmentioned, she gained more attention for the maple syrup diet she enlisted to help her slim down for the role. -
9. Reese Witherspoon. Reese immortalised June Carter as the wife of Johnny Cash along side Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line. She gained an Oscar nomination for her role, and proved that she had quite a set of lungs.
