Cosmo chats: Benny Benassi

You might not know his face, but you'd definitely know his music. Benny Benassi is a Grammy Award-winning Italian DJ and producer responsible for song Satisfaction which was featured on the controversial 'tongue' ad for Tooheys Extra Dry. Since then, he'd also be featured on your playlist with collaborations with Chris Brown, Kelis and T-Pain. We caught up with aptly nicknamed 'Godfather of Electro' to find out what makes a good dance track.

One of your most well-known songs is 'Satisfaction'. Did sales soar after the Tooheys Extra Dry ad came out and went viral?
That's a good question! I have no idea. Maybe we should ask the label in Australia!

You also worked with Chris Brown on his hit Beautiful People. What was it like to work with him?
It was all done on the internet. My cousin and studio partner, Alle Benassi, and I sent the instrumental to our friend Jean Baptiste in LA who wrote the lyrics to our music. It was JB who played it to Chris Brown. Chris loved it and performed it. We really loved the lift Chris gave to the song and it just happened. It's amazing how music can be made at a distance with today's technology.

Obviously these days with the advent of YouTube and social media, video clips are pretty important. What do you think makes a good dance/electro clip?

Ideally... a good idea. Not all videos have a solid idea in there and it's always a bit of a lottery but we try to work our videos around an idea. I think the video for 'Cinema' is a good example. It has a story and there isn't even any lip-sync, so in fact it's a short, simple movie. Fun to watch!

Your 'Spaceship' clip looks like it was a big production. How long did that take to film?
It only took a day to film and... months... for the post-production. All the spaceship stuff and the stuff on the planet was done on the computer and they kept putting back the delivery date. But it was worth waiting for!

Your name is pretty well-known around the club and dance scene - what are your must-haves for a good party?
A good sound system and people who are there for the music, not to pose.

You're known as the 'Godfather of Electro' - who are your prodigies? What names should be looking out for in the next couple of years?
It's a big title to live up to! Right now I really like what Congorock and Skrillex are doing. They're on fire and very talented.

What's your favourite festival to play - and what are you looking forward to?
In general I really enjoy festivals. I like outdoor events in the sunshine, I like listening to what other DJs are doing and hanging out with them. And of course I'm looking forward to coming back to Stereosonic. It's a unique experience to be part of a traveling festival and really exciting.
