COSMO CHATS: EMMA STONE
What did you think of the script when you first read it? Did you fall in love with the story?
I did. Absolutely, because I think it's so rare that you read an original script that isn't a sequel, prequel or threequel. It also covers so many different types of love. I love that Hannah goes with Jacob - usually it's the reverse. She is with Jacob and then she ends up with Richard, and this is the opposite. I know this woman cheats on her husband but you're rooting for them to get back together. I mean, how often does that happen? But there are so many gray areas when you really get to see these relationships and I thought it was fantastic to see an original romantic comedy. I think it's so rare.
How do you feel about how men pick up women in the way that Ryan Gosling's character, Jacob, does in the film?
Well, I know a lot of guys, to be honest with you, that don't pick up women in that way or that have figured out that women figured that out a long time ago, and have outsmarted the situation. Although, I do see the game. I see the game a lot, you know that. The insult, compliment, insult, compliment, insult, compliment. So, that's the new pickup line. The game - it works.... It works.
What's the worst pick-up line you've ever had?
I really wish I had a better answer to this question. I don't know. I didn't think that people were still using pick-up lines. It's funny that people are asking about pick-up lines, because this movie is about not using pick-up lines. But Jacob does have game; he does indeed.
You've really shown your comedic chops in this film and also inEasy A. Were you funny in high school? Is this new?
No, I was like the obnoxious ham from 5 years-old on. If I lived in medieval times, I think I'd be a court jester or something like that. Absolutely, that was always the goal: to make people laugh. That was my survival method.
What kind of funny things did you do as a kid?
I don't think I was that funny. I think I was just kind of obnoxious. I think I was loud. It mirrors very much my life now.
What attracts you in other people?
Vulnerability and honestly. I don't like when you can sense that they're not telling you something or they're being strong. I think it's a lot sexier and a lot stronger when they admit what they're afraid of. That's probably the only one thing. And humour, of course. Anybody would say that, but that's huge.
In real life, would you ever be attracted to someone like Ryan? His character, not him.
Why not him?
Because we're talking about Crazy, Stupid, Love…
Absolutely. For the record, absolutely.
You seem very grounded considering your career is rising so fast. Do you think you'll stay that way?
Well, the thing about me is I'm not fatalistic concerning this, my job. I'll hold it pretty lightly, because it ebbs and flows so much and it comes and goes, and I know that things will change. So if I get too attached to one way of living or one way of thinking - or one way of being, then I'm going to be screwed later on. That kind of expectation just leads to disappointment. As long as my relationships with my friends and family are good, then all the stuff that happens with this can't ever really be that bad. When people ask about working with Steve of Julianne or Woody Harrelson, even those people have their priorities completely straight. Their family comes first, and they love their job, and they have fun, and they do what they're passionate about, but they don't need it. It doesn't fill a hole in them. They're filled by their family and by their kids and, in any job, don't you think that's the most important thing? Because you can't take it with you, any of that stuff.
