If you’ve seen No Strings Attached, you’ll know that Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman are BOTH the lead stars. Their roles were equally as important as each other’s, they were both on the posters, they both did the same amount of press, etc, etc.
So it’s shocking – or maybe not that shocking – to learn the massive difference in the pay cheques they got for that movie.
While the whole pay disparity thing wasn’t as much of a big deal back in 2011 as it has been in more recent years, Natalie opened up in a new interview with Marie Claire UK about how much more Ashton was paid for the movie.
“Ashton was paid three times as much as me on No Strings Attached,” she said.
THREE TIMES. In case anyone forgot, Natalie is an Oscar-winning actress.
She continued, “I knew and I went along with it because there’s this thing with ‘quotes’ in Hollywood,” explaining that a quote is the highest someone has ever been paid.
With their quotes, “His was three times higher than mine so they said he should get three times more.”
“I wasn’t as pissed as I should have been. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it’s hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy.”
Natalie also said that even though Hollywood stars get paid handsomely, the disparity between men and women doing the same job is a lot worse than other professions. “Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar. In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar.”
She used the interview to share her experience more than campaign for equal pay, which is kind of what Scarlett Johansson did almost a year ago when she was asked about the topic too. They haven’t been as outspoken as Jennifer Lawrence, but still, it’s nuts to think how a male actor and his ‘quote’ is still so over-valued.
