Rihanna - queen of cool or bad role model?

RiRi responds to a journo’s scathing attack on her, but whose side are you on?

Rihanna

Controversial UK journalist, Liz Jones publically laid into Rihanna via a story on The Mail Online yesterday, branding her “Pop’s poisonous princess” and a “toxic role model”. Ouch.

Talking about a picture RiRi posted on Instagram this week of her smoking two huge spliffs while in Amsterdam, Jones says she is sending out a bad message to her massive social media following, largely made up of young girls.

“I don’t care if she has the voice of an angel and is self-made, feisty and confident.” She barks in the article. “All these qualities pale to nothing when we know she went back to her abusive boyfriend, Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to assaulting her in 2009; that she promotes drug-taking, drinking and the sort of fashion sense on stage that surely invites rape at worst, disrespect at least.”

We think she’s got a nerve to be calling anyone a bad role model while voicing views on women “inviting rape”. But it does have to be said that Rihanna has been reaching new heights of controversy recently.

Pictures from her current Diamonds World Tour show her grabbing her crotch (in a more porno than MJ style), and she definitely doesn’t care about how much flesh she shows. (Note the boob shot above.)

And it’s not just the overtly sexual nature she portrays, she also openly (and frequently) talks of her use of cannabis and excessive drinking, and has glamourized gun use. (She has a tattoo of a gun and has been pictured with a gun phone cover.)

But seeing as she’s not one for keeping anything under wraps, Rihanna hit back at Jones today via her Instagram page, posting this long message along with a pretty unflattering picture.

“LOL!!!! My money got a bad habit of pissing people off!! If you sincerely wanna help little girls more than their own parents do, here's a toxic tip: don't be amateur with your articles, you sound bitter! What's all this about hair and nails and costumes and tattoos?? ....That shit ain't clever!!! That shit ain't journalism! That's a sad sloppy menopausal mess!!!”

(We totes LOL’d at that last part.)

“Nobody over here acts like they're perfect! I don't pretend that I'm like you, i just live... My life!! And I don't know why y'all still act so surprised by any of it!! "Role Model" is not a position or title that I have ever campaigned for, so chill wit dat! I got my own fucked up shit to work on, I'll never portray that as perfect, but for right now it's ME!! Call it what ya want!! Toxic was cute, Poisonous Pop Princess had a nice ring to it, just a lil wordy! And P.S. my first American Vogue cover was in 2011...APRIL!!! #ElizabethAnnJones.”

What do you think? Does Liz Jones have a point? Or does she need to shut her big, judgemental mouth? Does Rihanna need to face up to the fact that through being in the public eye she is a role model, so she should act like one? Or is she still the coolest chick in pop? Answers below please, this is a tough one.
