I’ll take any excuse whatsoever to write about my absolute favourite comedians, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Lucky for me, they’re making history today as the first ever female duo to host the Golden Globes. I’m calling it now – I think they might just be the greatest Golden Globes hosts of all time.
If you’re unfamiliar with T-Fey and the Poehlster, get yourself acquainted quick-smart. Your life will be all the rosier for having their ridiculous funniness in it. Tina is the creator, writer and leading lady in 30 Rock, based not-so-loosely on her time at Saturday Night Live. Amy Poehler is SNL royalty too, but her latest hit is Parks and Recreation, a sitcom so adorable I wish you’d stop reading this blog and watch it right this moment. T & A met in the ‘90s doing improvisational comedy in Chicago and they’ve been besties for 20 years. If I could be the third wheel to any BFF-duo in Hollywood, it’d be these birds. (They actually auctioned off the chance to be their best friend for the night… and someone bought their friendship for $36,000).
We’ve had the “Women aren’t as funny as men!” discussion so many times now it makes my heart hurt and my head spin. Any haters who still believe that men are fundamentally more hilarious than women? I challenge them to watch Tina and Amy rock the Golden Globes gig, and hold on to that opinion.
In the meantime, I bring you the Top 5 Reasons Tina & Amy rock my world:
1. They’ve invented a drinking game for you to play while you watch the Golden Globes:
*Drink any time an actress cries in a speech.
*Drink any time you see a person actively not listening to someone else.
*Drink any time someone says “I didn’t prepare anything!”
*Eat a meatball sub any time someone thanks Harvey Weinstein.
*Take off an article of clothing any time they show Judi Dench.
*Take off an article of clothing any time Maggie Smith wins.
2. They’ve released this hilarious promo:
AND the extended, super awks interview (these ladies have the Awkward Funnies down to an art) about hosting the GG’s:
3. A little sample of their banter:
Tina: “Personally, I’d like to win Best Picture. Just me, like, as a person, winning Best Picture. I think that would be unprecedented, especially because I didn’t really make a movie this year.”
Amy: “I haven’t been keeping up with popular culture, is it Avatar this year? We’ve been practicing. The Golden Globe for Best Actor goes to…”
Tina: “Daniel Day Lewis for Avatar!”
4. THEY WROTE MEAN GIRLS.
5. They’ve changed the way female comedians operate, like, for good.
They’ve proven that funny women can write, create, produce and star in wildly successful prime-time shows. They’re serious power-brokers in TV and comedy circles, which has enabled women like Lena Dunham (creator/star of Girls) and Kristen Wiig (creator/writer of Bridesmaids) to do the same. They’re comedy revolutionaries.
