It's true, I have a massive crush. A design crush, that is. Want to know why?

I first clapped eyes on Kelly Wearstler in 2008 when I was watching Top Design, her outfits were crazy eclectic but she was one of those people whom you couldn't wait to see what she was going to say or wear next. To say I admire Kelly Wearstler is an understatement, forget Coco Chanel, the Pope and Gandhi, give me a Wearstler wallpaper-covered shrine and I'll pray at it any day. She uses colour and pattern like no other and is the queen of modern American glamour.  Described as “maximalist mid century”, Kelly has made over some major hotels including her first, the Avalon in Beverly Hills and more recently the Viceroy in Miami (below).

Her mood boards are legendary (below) they're enough to make anyone want to paint a staircase magenta and add a black and white geometric carpet to match (oh, and alwayswith a brass accent). She is not for the faint of heart or for those not ready to mortgage their home for an amethyst-encrusted door knob but you can take cues from her style in the form of an accessory or a wall covering or even bed linen. She has a range of decorator pieces in her online shop and she also caters for those with a more robust wallet, check out her beautiful furniture pieces. Kelly has released 4 books to date, Modern Glamour: The Art of Unexpected Style, Domicilium Decoratus, Hue, and the most recent (and best in my opinion) Rhapsody, trust me, after reading these you will think it is completely normal to cover your bathroom in gold chevron mirror tiles...It was in Rhapsody that I fell head over heels in love with a room so completely that I can barely look at it (I know, a bit of an over-reaction but that's why I love this stuff!) I think what drew me to it initially was the wallpaper (or custom paint job?) then I noticed the mirrored bed and then the chubby ruched pink leather chairs, and that chandelier? I mean, you could sort of believe a man also lived in here too, right? When I eventually own a house it will be my first “go to” for inspiration.

Kelly also has a great blog that is like an insider’s peek into her design process, from looking for furniture to finding an inspiring piece of graffiti, it's called My Vibe My Life. Oh, and did I mention, Kelly has branched out into fashion and has created a line of clothes and accessories that have quite literal translations from her interior style? Check it out here, you will fall in love too.

See you next week - Claudia
