Cosmo careers: graduate edition

I am currently in Year 11 and lately I've been thinking about what I'd like to do when I leave school. It has always been my dream to get into the journalism industry but I'm not sure what courses to take and if I should gain work experience beforehand. Could you give me some advice?
Melissa

Hi Melissa,
You should absolutely follow your dream of working in journalism. The best way to start a career in journalism is to secure work experience at a magazine or newspaper. That said, it is also no mean feat to secure that opportunity. To secure a work experience gig you need approach a magazine that you want to work for. Do this by emailing the appropriate person your resume plus samples of articles that you have written. If you really want to impress them create your own magazine on www.magcloud.com and send them a copy. Then be prepared to make a lot of follow-up phone calls. If you have the persistence and thick skin that it takes to secure an intern position then you will be well on your way to having a career in journalism.
There are lots of journalism courses that you can take ranging from private courses, TAFE courses, to Bachelor and Post Graduate qualifications. It really depends on how much time you want to commit to study. For more information on how to succeed in your career read my e-book Simple Strategies For Career Success.

I am graduating with a Bachelor of Medical Science at the end of the year. All the jobs I seem to find on careers websites require experience, which I obviously don’t have. How do I look for a job as a graduate? Where do I look, if everyone is asking for experience or casual/part time work? Also, I heard employers ask for your uni transcript when you go to a job interview. My transcript is not great – I have a lot of ‘fails’ because I went through a lot of family problems. How do I get around this when facing my prospective employer? Will they even bother to interview me, having seen my transcript?
Confused

Hi Confused,
Don’t panic! Less than perfect transcripts and lack of professional experience are not the end of the world or be it your potential future career. They are just obstacles to overcome. The best step to take in this situation is to approach organisations that you would like to work for and offer to do work experience with them. Do an absolutely amazing job so that they will want to offer you a permanent position.  For more information on how to succeed in your career read my e-book Simple Strategies For Career Success.
