Question:
A friend recently told me that if I replace white rice with brown rice and potato with sweet potato that it is healthier and I will lose weight. Is this true?
Jane, via e-mail
Answer:
Sweet potato (like rice and potatoes) has a low glycaemic index (GI), which means it is digested more slowly than high-GI carbohydrates. There is a relationship between low-GI eating patterns and lower body weight, but the effects of following a low-GI diet are really only visible over a long period of time. As long as you limit portions of carbohydrates to one-cup serves, you're on the right track. Where possible, choose wholegrain varieties as rice and pasta.
