The What’s Underneath Project is about changing the way we think of beauty. Model Melanie Gaydos is a perfect example of that. She has a genetic disorder called ectodermal dysplasia and it affects her pores, hair, teeth and fingernails.
Rather than let her condition debilitate her, she’s a high fashion model making waves in the industry. The What’s Underneath Project interview Gaydos and asked her to gradually remove pieces of clothing as she told the camera her story. By the end of the video, Gaydos is in just her underwear.
“When I go on a photo shoot, the other industry models don’t know what to make of me,” she says. “They’re usualy like, ‘What the f* is this?’ it’s difficult for me in the fashion world; people think I’m a gimmick and that I’m just being exploited for my differences.”
She says she began modelling a few years ago, when her photographer boyfriend suggested she try it.
“I have thought how I would be if I was born without a cleft palate and wil a full head of hair, and I think I would be really boring,” Melanie admits. “Even though I’ve been thorugh a lot, they’re my experiences, and I like where everything has brought me today.”
If that’s not inspiring, we don’t know what is.
