Glass half full?
The worrying new trend affecting Australian women
Just a week after reports that Australia is now the fattest nation on earth, a British dietician has coined a new term for a female body shape - the wineglass - due to our love of booze.
Traditionally known as "the apple," meaning larger upper half (for instance, big breasts and broad shoulders) Jacqui Lowdon (from the British Dietetic Association) has renamed the term to reflect its likely cause - too much alcohol.
Lowdon says the shape - characterised by a bloated middle but slender legs - is the result of otherwise fit and healthy women drinking more than they should - often to keep up with their male counterparts. Right now, Britney Spears is the poster girl for the wineglass.
The trend has been labelled "worrying" by leading Australian health expert Dr John Tickell, who points out that carrying extra weight around your middle can lead to diabetes, bowel cancer and breast cancer.
