In the lead-up to Australia Day, we wanted to celebrate the things we love about our country. So here are 26 of them!

We're known for being a fairly relaxed lot - and as far as repuations go, we reckon that's a good one. -
Christmas in summer: because spending Christmas Day on the beach is just awesome. -
The Castle: because digging a hole is actually a pretty big acheivement, when you think about it. -
Kerri-Anne is a national treasure. -
Fresh fruit: We're so lucky to be able to buy fruit relatively cheap in Australia - and at such amazing quality. Daily mangoes in summer might be small luxuries, but they're luxuries nonetheless. -
Tim Tams: dunked in coffee or tea, you've got to suck out the gooey mess inside. -
Pavlova: crunchy meringue, creamy, um, cream and fresh fruit. Australia's dessert. -
Sportsgirl, Dotti, Forever New, General Pants - we may not have TopShop or Zara, but we do have pretty awesome chain stores. -
Beaches. 'Nuff said. -
We don't have to rely on Starbucks for coffee... -
Drive two hours from anywhere, and you're bound to find some peace and quiet. -
Seafood: all-year round! Pacific oysters, prawns, Balmain bugs, Tasmanian salmon and wild scallops. -
Self-deprecating humour: Summer Heights High, Kath & Kim, The Games, Frontline etc. -
The fact that our Prime Minister's name is Kevin...and our treasurer's name is Wayne. -
The fact that almost all of our celebrities made their start on either Neighbours or Home and Away: see left. -
Barbecues: If you don't enjoy a snag on the barbie, you're un-Australian. Simple as that. -
Pubs: Sure, they're not a purely Aussie invention, but the great Aussie pub is one of the shining beacons of our culture. -
sass & bide jeans: They began the denim revolution of the late 90s, and for that, our butts and thighs are eternally grateful. -
Thongs: practically the national uniform. Thank God. -
Year-round sunshine: except, of course, if you live in Melbourne. -
Beetroot on burgers: screw the haters, we love beetroot on burgers. -
Tipping isn't compulsory: which means we can tip for good service, not just because our poor waiter/waitress doesn't earn enough to support themselves. -
Violet Crumbles: Nothing says "I'm Australian" like a Violet Crumble threatening to send you to the dentist. -
Sam Worthington: because he's really, really ridiculously good-looking. -
The shandy: where else but Australia could you order beer with lemonade? -
Anzac biscuits: golden syrup, oats, sugar and butter. This one is pretty self-explanatory.
