Nightlife in Wellington, NZ
This freedom to party comes in handy in New Zealand's capital, Wellington. The scene pulses, especially around Cuba St - a city strip famous for its colourful, cosmopolitan vibe by day, and heady, careening nightlife once the sun sets.
Picture this: you've wrapped up your shopping for the day.
Purchase-weary, you and the girls heave parcels of designer and
secondhand gems back to your upmarket accommodation, with views
over the bay. After a few moments in front of the mirror (let's not
rush things), and a preparatory aperitif, you look to dazzling Cuba
St for the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner.
Entering award-winning Matterhorn is an experience in itself. Your most elegant old-time frock will feel at home drifting down the long corridor off Cuba St, through double swinging doors, to perch nonchalantly at the bar. Here, you peruse a temptation of cocktails with dramatic names like Blackberry Death in the Afternoon (La Fée absinthe-macerated blackberries / Duvel Leroy 96 champagne).
Onto Hawthorne Lounge, within waltzing distance
on Tory St, and you're transported to a meticulously designed
setting lifted straight from a 1920s film. Snack on wasabi peas and
chat to your debonair, waistcoast-clad barman, who will introduce
you to the dizzying array of spirits and mixers. It's easy to lose
a few hours in this classy, rat-pack establishment.
You begin to feel restless on your leather lounge - it must be
time for some music. Back down Cuba St and up a staircase to
Mighty Mighty, and you've stumbled into
Wellington's word-renowned music scene. Most nights the bar plays
host to local and international bands but even when the amps are
unplugged, there's an atmosphere of fun and freedom that bangs on
until late.
Wellington doesn't retire early, but if you're in need of a
pick-me-up, there is always a coffee on hand (or, even better, an
espresso martini). Duck into Alice Bar in nearby
Forresters Lane for a breather - this little haunt is a Wonderland
in itself, just follow the neon white rabbit...
From back-in-time bars to rollicking music hubs, Wellington's
nightlife has so many secret haunts, it's impossible to know them
all.
If you're ready for a party Wellington is the perfect short break
destination, and although Aussie's claim they would love to visit,
only 1 out of 5 end up crossing the ditch. Air New Zealand wants to
get more people to the land of the long white cloud, a place the
airline proudly calls home.
