Take the challenge
Cosmo Health writer Andree fulfils all his Amazing Race/adrenalin junkie needs with a fun race around Sydney
Late last year, I participated in the Urban Max Challenge with my friend Tash. Urban Max is part adventure race, part scavenger hunt and part amazing race around the beautiful city of Sydney. Here's how it works: each team is given a clue sheet which includes 20 clues. These clues must be solved in order to find out where all the check points are. Once you have solved the clues (or at least think you've solved them!), you race around the city and its surrounding suburbs, running from checkpoint to checkpoint in order to get to the finish line as quickly as you can. At some checkpoints all you have to do it scan yourself in, but at others, challenges such as snorkelling or lolly-eating await! The only form of transport you can use is the bus and train, so needless to say, the challenge is also a great form of exercise!
There was a massive turn out this year - apparently more than 1000 people entered the race and all from different age groups! It was great to see so many more people getting involved, but it also meant we had to step up our game as we had more people to compete against.
Once the race kicked off at 9.30am, Tash and I spent a good 20 minutes trying to solve as many clues as possible before heading off. Thank goodness for modern technology as mobile phones come in very handy when needing to look something up or phone a friend. Once we were confident we had solved enough clues to get started, we set off. We travelled from The Entertainment Quarter to The Rocks, then to mid city, Kings Cross, Petersham and back again. Tash and I visited places that we'd never seen before, even though we have been near or passed the area so many times in the past, plus we were able to try activities that have always been on our must-do lists! Take the indoor rock climbing - this was something both Tash and I have always wanted to do and was so much fun!
All teams had to be back at the finish line by 3.30pm. We returned and checked ourselves in and were told we'd finished 10 of the required 14 checkpoints. We were pleased with that result, but a little disappointed that we couldn't do all 14. In the end it didn't matter what place we came, it was just a fun way to spend the day with a friend and we had such a great time. I'll definitely be signing up again next year and have told all my friends to get involved too. If you're keen to take part, click here.
