Tall, dark and handsome

A new study from the University of Aberdeen has revealed that the type of man you look for is a direct indicator of your wellbeing. The findings showed that the worse a woman’s health, the more she seeks out a masculine man.

Quite simply, it all comes down to survival of the species – a woman with poor health will seek out a masculine man to ensure healthy babies.

4500 women from 30 different countries, all in their 20s, were asked to determine which two versions of a man’s face was more attractive. They were shown a man with a square, "masculine" jaw (think Gerard Butler), and a man with a "feminine", slim jaw (along the lines of Johnny Depp).

Results found that women from the countries with the poorest health preferred the manlier man, while those in healthy countries went for the pretty boy type.

The study also showed that most women (regardless of their health) preferred a masculine man during the most fertile stage of their menstrual cycle.

While it might seem like macho men win in this instance, think again. The participants in the study perceived masculine men as "dishonest, uncooperative, more interested in short-term than long-term relationships", and even as "bad parents".
