The best things in life are free … Here’s 10

Finances giving you the baby blues? Check out these freebies and next to nix buys.

Movie date!

Baby, you deserve a break! Hoyts offers free movies for all kids under five (that's bub taken care of) at their Mums & Bubs sessions that take place twice a month on a Thursday, except during school holidays. Lights are on but dimmed to make feeding easy and nappy-changing facilities are also available. Adults attending the sessions will only pay $9 instead of the usual full price and you're not restricted to sitting through another animation; you can catch an adult flick for yourself, too. See hoyts.com.au for participating cinemas and session details.

Feeding facts

Qualified volunteer counsellors are ready to help you 24/7 with your nursing concerns at the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Call the Breastfeeding Helpline on 1800 686 268 or visit breastfeeding.asn.au and download the free Breastfeeding Confidence e-book.

Easy strider

Struggling to stay fit with a bub in tow? Pack up the pram and get moving. You can put up a sign for a walking partner in your local supermarket or contact Heart Foundation Walking, a free community initiative that can help you find a walking group near you. Call 1300 362 787 or head online to heartfoundation.org.au for more info.

Family discounts

If your family's out-of-pocket medical bills (the difference between the Medicare benefit and your doctor's fees) exceed $1198, you can expect 80 per cent of additional costs to be covered by the Medicare Safety Net. Register your family and Medicare will calculate your costs for the calendar year. Once the $1198 threshold is reached, you'll only pay 20 per cent of further out-of-hospital costs for the rest of the year. Visit medicareaustralia.gov.au.

That's a weight off

How many wet nappies a day is normal? Does rubbing a Band-Aid with baby oil make it easier to remove? If you've got questions, big or small, pop into your local Terry White Chemist where
a pharmacy nurse can answer them. Terry White also operates free baby weighing stations in most stores nationally so you can check bub's development while getting advice on everything from breastfeeding to toilet training. See terrywhitechemists.com.au.
