Sleeping in the buff11:16AM, Jan 15, 2013
When you head to bed do you throw on your latest purchase from Peter Alexander or let it all hang out? While it might feel weird disrobing, it seems that sleeping nude can have huge health benefits...
Get good Zzz
Excess clothing can actually get in the way of decent shuteye, because while it might seem like a good idea to be warm and cocooned at night, it actually is better to have a cooler environment. Sleep expert Lisa Shives says, "Your body temp progressively declines as you sleep, which is a natural tendency of the body, so being too warm with heavy PJs and blankets can disrupt that." If you’re too hot your body will alert you to wake up, but sleeping naked can help you keep cool. You should also opt for cotton sheets and blankets so air can circulate.
Let it breathe
So seriously, you need to let your lady bits get some air. Everyone's mum told them this when they were little (cue embarrassment) and, as always, mum knows best! Jennifer Landa, author of The Sex Drive Solution for Women, advises that a warm environment while you are sleeping (e.g. if you wear undies to bed) can cause an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria. And while it’s perfectly normal to have bacteria down there, too much isn’t healthy – so go commando and air it out.
Feel more confident
Landa says if we sleep bare, "We can tune in to sensations like the feeling of the sheets and the coolness of the air, which can be very sexy. And feeling sexy increases confidence." So while you might think wearing lacy lingerie is the quickest way to feel hot in bed, you might actually find that your birthday suit will leave you feeling sexier. "Women who feel confident enough to get into bed naked with their partner are also confident to be sexually responsive," says sexologist Susie Tuckwell. Further, you can keep your skin looking healthier by going nude: naturopath Natasha Turner says that being too warm at night disrupts the release of melatonin (which regulates sleep) and growth hormones - the main anti-aging chemicals in the body. So to make sure your skin stays at the optimum temperature for regeneration, she advises getting nude. And we all know that good skin equals better body confidence.
Have better sex
Obviously the more confident you are, the better sex you’ll have. However, getting your bod out has an actual biological effect on your sex life too - laying skin-to-skin will increase the release of the feel good hormone oxytocin (sometimes called the cuddle chemical). Tuckwell says, "The skin contact promotes certain chemicals, including oxytocin, and feelings of emotional closeness, warmth and safety. All of which are important for women to have on-going sexual relationships." This will leave you and your guy more up for it: "Sleeping naked encourages sex and sexier relationships are happier relationships," says Landa. Your partner will also be turned on if you ditch the PJs says Tuckwell, "If you're sleeping naked with a male partner, since men are visual, it will increase his arousal levels and therefore lead to more testosterone-fuelled desire and hotter sex." Everyone’s a winner!
Lose belly fat
If you weren’t already convinced then this one will have you converting to sleeping sans jimjams: snoozing in the buff can help you lose weight around your stomach region. We all know that sleep has a huge impact on our waist line, and because a nude snooze makes you rest more soundly, it also ensures that levels of the stress hormone cortisol (which is responsible for belly bludge) are kept in check. If you continually wake up throughout the night, cortisol levels rise and you will wake up ravenous and craving comfort food. So say good bye to your tracky bottoms to ensure you’re sleeping through the night and keeping hormonal levels even.
There you have it, who knew getting naked could be so good for you! We’re going home to burn our pyjamas now!
