Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old son of an assistant director on the Hunger Games movies, went on a killing rampage on Friday in Isla Vista, California, killing six people and injuring a further 13 in a drive-by massacre.
Prior to the murders, Rodger had posted various videos online ranting his misogynistic views about “sluts” and how their lack of interest in him sexually was the cause of his shooting spree.
“I desire girls, I’m sexually attracted to girls. But girls are not sexually attracted to me, and I have a major problem with that. A major problem. That’s a problem that I intend to rectify with all my magnificence and power. I will not let this fly. It’s an injustice that needs to be dealt with,” he said in one such video.
“The world is such a beautiful place, it’s such a tragedy that I’ve had to live such a pathetic life in it, all because of the cruelty of humanity - and women.”
"Tomorrow is the day of retribution, the day in which I will have my revenge . . . you girls aren't attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it. I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, the true alpha male.”
Shockingly, Rodger’s actions and views attracted cries of support from like-minded men online. But in response, women have mustered what is quite possibly the most important hashtag ever - #YesAllWomen.
More than 150,000 people have now coined the hashtag, which has been trending on Twitter. Women and men are using it in response to men’s rights activists sympathising with Rodger – highlighting everything from everyday examples of sexism, to ever-present gender stereotypes, to stories of sexual abuse.
The tweets are harrowing yet empowering, sombre yet motivating – and work as an awesome rallying cry for women and men alike to realise that these ideas about women are real, dangerous and need to stop. We do not 'owe' men attention, we do not owe them sex, we do not owe them anything.
Here are 20 particularly impassioned and thought-provoking messages from the hundreds we’ve read so far. Keep them coming, ladies. Let's make a difference.
The reactions shocked me.
