Could you give yourself a needle jab several times a day?

An increasing number of pregnant women have to check their own blood on a daily basis, with gestational diabetes on the rise. Recent figures show one in 20 pregnant women are affected and hospital units set up to deal with the condition are being swamped.

Experts say the dramatic increase in the past 20 years may be due to rising rates of obesity, as well as the fact that women are having children later in life. Those most at risk though, are those who already have existing type 1 or 2 diabetes. The condition can result in complications, such as giving birth prematurely or to a larger baby.

All expectant mums, but particularly those at risk, should keep up regular safe exercise and eat healthily – not “for two” as some might like to think!
