As Online and Entertainment Editor, I edit the website, interview celebrities and get to listen to cool new albums for the mag's Watch & Listen pages. Every few nights, I'm a proud guest at the opening of an envelope (or at least, the spruiking of one) and my desk is frequently flooded with DVDs, books and movie passes.

In bloom

"And what sort of flowers will you have?" my Mum asked.

"Mmm....I don't think I will have flowers, actually," I replied.

"WHAT? You. Must. Have. Flowers."

It's not just Mum who thinks like this, either. D, my fiance, is pretty adamant that I should be holding a bouquet at our wedding.

To be honest, I couldn't care less about flowers. I think they're pretty unnecessary. People (that is, Mum, D) have countered, "What will you do with your hands?", like I always have a bouquet in my hands and this is the one occasion on which I won't, rendering me helpless and fidgety. I really do not foresee this happening.

What do you guys think? Is it OK not to have flowers? What's the argument for having them, anyway?

I want a bouquet for exactly that reason, however I do get fidgety (as do my bridesmaids), so for me it's a way to look less uncomfortable walking down the aisle. However we are going without all the other flowers that you apparently "need" for a wedding - everyone who'll be there knows who our parents are, so they don't need uncomfortable corsages or silly buttonholes to identify them.

Flowers are expensive. However, I want a bouquet for the photo's. It does look nice when the groomsmen match the bridesmaids through the touch of colour a buttonhole gives. For example, I recently saw a bridal party, bridesmaids in a purple dress with green, and the men in black suits with a purple tie, purple pocket square and a purple flower with associated greenery. The guys looked amazing, very smart. Having said that, a matching tie and/or pocket square still carries the same effect.

....I think you said you were not having a bridal party, so I understand why you are questioning having a bouquet since you carry it when you walk down the isle and for some photos but thats it. So if I were you I would deem flowers as part of your finishing touches and decide whether part of your budget will go the flowers or something else to make your wedding special to you both.

I am recently and although I wasn't too keen on flowers either, I did end up getting 3 calla stems (so nothing too large or imposing...) and it did make a real difference with what to do with my hands and also was lovely for the photographs ( done by Katja Anton Photography www.katjaanton.com on the sunshine coast - very happy with her work and she's lovely too!) - good luck with whatever you decide!
