it's a bit fishy
The new beauty treatment causing a stir
Prepare for the latest in pampering - fish will soon be nibbling away at the dead skin on your feet.
The treatments - dubbed 'fish pedicures' - are creating quite a stir in the United States, where they are being trialled for the first time.
John Ho, who owns a beatuy salon in Virginia, claims that 5000 customers have sampled the pedicure to date. He first experimented with the fish pedicure because he wanted an alternative to using razors to scrape away dead skin on the feet. Recently, the razors have been deemed unsanitary.
The tiny, toothless capr nibble away at your feet to remove dead skin. After 15 to 30 minutes, customers are treated to a regular pedicure. The treatment works so well because the fish (called garra rufa or doctor fish) typically live in hot water, where plant life doesn't flourish. Without food sources, the fish have learnt to survive on any food matter, including dead skin. Live skin is safe from the fish because they have no teeth.
One customer, Tracy Roberts, claimed it was "the best pedicure I've ever had."
"I'd been an athlete all my life, so I've always had calluses on my feet. This was the first time someone got rid of my calluses completely."
