Having been very career orientated until this point, Renee is excited about this new chapter in her life.

It's the little things

The Christmas period is a busy and expensive one, especially when you are also in the midst of final preparations for the arrival of a baby. Needless to say, I have gone through cash these past few weeks as I would imagine I will go through breast pads and maternity pads in the first few weeks after my son arrives. It was nice then, to receive gifts for which I hadn’t paid for at my recent baby shower.

What a strange feeling it was to be the centre of attention at a baby shower. And even more strange was how quickly whole conversations between a group of highly intelligent women turned to babies, babies and more baby talk ( a note to any of those expectant mums having a baby shower soon, DO NOT play the peg game where you lose a peg for every time you mention the word “baby”. You are bound to lose).

An even stranger feeling was the “what the…” moments I had throughout the shower, for example when I received a gift and I had no idea what it was; or when I raised the subject of a product I became aware of, the Epi-No, that supposedly reduces your risk of tearing or the need for an episotomy (apparently my friends, the majority of which have all had babies, are not supportive of such a product); or when we played the “guess the baby food flavour” game which started a slight debate over bought vs. homemade solids for our young friends (a debate which could have ended up quite heated had we not quickly changed the subject). Baby showers definitely bring home the reality of what your life is about to become. But I must say, those of my friends who have children, light up when speaking of their young ones, and I was extremely jealous that their little ones were outside of the womb rather than in-utero like mine.

Another occurrence that brings home reality is when you are heavily pregnant and decide to push a friend’s pram throughout the streets of St Kilda to “test drive” what it feels like (because you’ve also purchased a Mountain Buggy). Well, it felt like I was at my very first driving lesson eager to look like I knew what I was doing and for what I would consider an easy and completely manageable task, I was nervous as hell. A feeling I will come to know quite well I would imagine.
