It's official! The Crown's Claire Foy is the new Lisbeth Salander in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel

Swapping a life of royalty for the next in the Millennium series.

After a few months of speculation, The Crown's Claire Foy has been officially confirmed as the next Lisbeth Salander in Sony Pictures's next Girl with a Dragon Tattoo film.

That's right – Queen Elizabeth II will next be tackling the role of the Swedish computer hacker in the big-screen version of The Girl in the Spider's Web, the fourth in the Lisbeth Salander book series.

And, going by recent pictures of the actress at the Toronto International Film Festival, it would appear Foy is already embracing Lisbeth's dark hair at the very least.

The casting was confirmed by Variety yesterday (September 15), along with a statement from the film's director Fede Alvarez confirming he was "thrilled" with the casting.

"I couldn't be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander," he said.

"Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth. I can't wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its centre."

The Girl in the Spider's Web will serve as a sequel to 2011's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – itself a remake of the Swedish-language version starring Noomi Rapace — which featured Rooney Mara as Lisbeth.

It's based on the Millennium series written by Steig Larsson, marking the first instalment of the series not to be written by Larsson following his untimely death in 2004.

Variety adds that production on the film will begin in January in Berlin and Stockholm, which will give Foy just enough time to promote her new film Breathe as well as season two of the hit Netflix series The Crown before getting to work.

Breathe serves as Andy Serkis's feature directorial debut and stars Andrew Garfield as Robin Cavendish with Foy as his wife Diana. It tells the real-life story of a man who became paralysed by polio at the age of 28 and went on to become a pioneering advocate for the disabled.

Meanwhile, The Crown's second season will mark Foy's final turn as the Queen as the series prepares to re-cast Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to portray the next stage of their lives – something Foy has said she's "not bitter" about.

The season is expected to follow Elizabeth and Philip (Matt Smith) from 1957 through to about 1964 – which means that we can expect to see the births of Princes Andrew (born 1960) and Edward (1964) – and will premiere on December 8.

The Girl in the Spider's Web is currently scheduled to be released on October 19, 2018.
