Looking for love this Valentine's Day? Probably best to steer clear of restaurants, bars and pubs - they'll be filled with loved-up couples canoodling over heart-shaped ravioli. But if you're up for a bit of adventure - and don't take yourself too seriously - maybe online dating is the key.
Online dating isn't what it used to be. First of all, there are so many sites now that you can choose one to suit your taste, whatever it may be. Secondly, we're all a little more Internet-savvy, so online dating is easier, more interactive and a lot more fun. And finally, we've all heard the success stories - online dating really can work (and not just in Meg Ryan movies).
Before you start, though, check out these tips from clinical psychologist Kim Halford, consultant for wendells.com.au, who knows a thing or two about online dating!
- Most sites will ask you to write a profile. Keep it light, fun and don't disclose too much! There's nothing worse than introducing yourself as someone who "has been burned in three consecutive long-term relationships". You wouldn't do it offline (hopefully!) so don't bring it online!
- When looking at others' profiles, looks for commonalities. If their profile doesn't reveal much, try emailing them to find out more. Ask them what they like to do on the weekend, what kinds of sports they enjoy, where their last holiday was - topics that will show you a bit more about them without you looking like you're invading their space.
- Don't expect to find the love of your life. You might - but don't go into it with the sole intention of finding Mr Perfect! If you're desperate to find the love of your life, chances are, you'll rush into something that's not quite right. Take your time, enjoy it and have fun. It's just dating!
