Protect your Assets

(because not every frog turns into a price...)

Love Rat!

Every girl takes her chances with romance and we know that not every frog we kiss will turn into a prince! Unfortunately, some of them will become rats - love rats. When a love rat reveals himself, you can't always protect your heart, but you can protect your financial assets by taking a few precautions. Check out these love rat profiles and the tips you can use to protect your financial assets.

The splurge

This is the guy who is always out wining and dining. He wooed you with romantic dinners at impressive restaurants and sealed the deal by whisking you away on a romantic holiday at a luxury location. Suddenly though, the tables have turned and you're constantly footing the bill. You can't help but wonder, does he really need to shout drinks for the whole bar every night with your credit card?

Man of the world

This guy has everyone on the edge of their seats as he turns the story of his ingrown toenail extraction into Pirates of the Caribbean. He's a man of the world: well-travelled, smart, funny and hot to boot. But when is he going to get it together, hold a job for more than a month and start contributing to some of the bills? It's time to face facts: the only future he's going to offer you is an expensive one.

The Jekyll and Hyde

This is the man who whisked you off your feet. He was different from the others: more stable, attentive and committed. He pursued you until you finally committed. Now you have the house, the baby and another on the way. Then one day, he doesn't come home and you don't hear from him for a week. When the phone finally rings, you already know what you'll hear on the other end. Now you're left to pay for two children and a mortgage - better start saving!

Tips to protect your financial assets
• Investigate his financial status before committing.
• Set up three separate bank accounts: one for you, one for him and one for both of you.
• Unless you're a bank teller, stop loaning him money!
• Talk to your lawyer about getting a pre-nuptial agreement.
• Follow your intuition: if something does not feel right, it probably isn't.
