Okay, so given the status of my bank account and the fact that my Internet history reveals a trail of online shopping websites, I'm probably not the best campaigner for saving money. But even I am wary of the need to shake my spending habits.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping on a tight budget, during these times of economic hardship:
Bypass fads
Any trend that seems remotely short-lived (such as the fluoro trend of last summer, or the arty-prints trend that I'm estimating will last not much longer than your first Friday-night drink), should be dismissed. If you simply must have it, make sure it's a bargain.
Buy for your body shape
If you are thinking of splurging on that party gown you've had your eyes on and want to wear it to as many dos as possible, make sure it is a shape that will suit your figure. That way, it will go the distance and will last for yonks - or at least until your boss grants you that deserved pay rise!
For example, if you are petite don't spend $500 on the to-die-for, one-shouldered-draped Kirrily Johnston dress in fuchsia as you probably won't want to regurgitate it next season (after all it's a standout item that your friends would remember). If you are curvy, think twice before splurging on fringed frocks as you probably don't want the texture to add extra visual weight. A gorgeous black tailored party frock by Matthew Eager or a floor-length maxi by Bianca Spender is much more worth the moolah.
Be savvy about spending
Your big-ticket items should be the classics that won't date. Items such as a black or beige trench coat, well-cut black pants, indigo jeans, a button-up white shirt and, patent black close-toe heels are all things that you can wear over and over, regardless of the season so it makes sense to spend on these things. Invest in quality.
Know your look
It's not the time to go trying new trends when your superannuation is losing value by the second. If you generally dress like Posh Spice, but you're wanting to look more like Lou Doillon, don't swing too drastically from one style to another. If the Posh-look works for your body (lucky you!) then sometimes it's best to stick to what you know. There's nothing wrong with rocking the same look repeatedly, as long as you don't go buying the same items. If you are dying to reinvent, take baby steps to the new you by buying cheaper accessories, such as scarves and cheap sandals you can thrash.
