COSMO COUPLE AWARDS: Edra & Martyn
Martyn and I met in California in 2006. We definitely had a special connection and knew at some point we would be married. This dream soon came true as we planned for a Gold Coast wedding in October of 2008.
Tragedy struck eight weeks before the wedding when I was diagnosed with leukaemia and told I may not live. The look on Martyn's face when he found out was worse than being sick, and the thought of never being married to him was heartbreaking.
"He never gave up hope that we could beat this; he was my rock. "
I wanted him to move on and not be stuck caring for someone who was so ill. Instead, he was amazing! He would visit me in the hospital, twice a day, for months while I received chemotherapy.
After I was released from the hospital, he took me to my doctors' appointments and treatments three times a week. I was so weak I could not even bathe myself. He was amazing and took such great care of me. He managed all this while working to support us financially. He never gave up hope that we could beat this; he was my rock.
I just finished my last chemotherapy in July and am cancer-free. We beat this battle with cancer together and finally had the wedding of our dreams. This experience has put into perspective how important we are to each other. I believe I would not have survived if it had not been for him!
