COSMO COUPLE AWARDS: Hayley & Asi
Asi and I were together just over a year when his dream of
joining the army became our reality. I was completely upset by the
idea, but would never stop him from doing what he loves. Throughout
all his training and moving around, I was trying to concentrate on
my studies and it was a very trying time for us both, with a lot of
change to take on board.
"After spending every day together, we had to go for three months without contact. "
After spending every day together, we had to go for three months
without contact. Asi is now based in Brisbane and I am in Sydney.
It has never been a reasonable option for me to live up there, as I
have university and commitments here. It has always been extremely
difficult, being in a close relationship for four years, as he's
away most birthdays, Christmases and special occasions, or even
just when we need a shoulder to lean on.
We can rarely organise in advance, as the army makes the final
decision. I explain it to others as something we just "get used
to"; although, deep down, I don't think I ever really get used to
the disappointment felt when we are told we cannot see each other
for a few months.
We have just found out Asi is on the list for deployment to
Afghanistan in mid-2012. Although it was somewhat expected, it is
something we are again going to have to accept and work through
together, just as we have since the beginning of our journey.
