COSMO COUPLE AWARDS: Laura & Simon
Simon and I met when we were 11. I was the nerd, he was the
skateboarding jock. He was my first love and I never forgot about
him when I left the small town we met in. I came back and ran into
him when I was 18, having spent the past seven years travelling and
growing. He hadn't changed a bit. Needless to say, we both fell in
love at that moment.
Within a few weeks, we were living together. He'd take me out to
his favourite fishing spots and surprise me with romantic picnics
on a rural lookout over the town. He taught me to wakeboard and to
drive. The two years we lived in that small town were amazing.
"He was my first love and I never forgot about him."
I decided to move to Perth (3000 kilometres away) in February
2011 and he couldn't leave with me, so we prepared to part ways. We
organised regular Skype calls, arranged new unlimited phone plans
and scheduled our finances so we could fly to each other as often
as possible. Even so, I was distraught.
The day before I was due to leave, Simon took me to dinner. During
dessert, he handed me an envelope and told me to open it. Inside
was a one-way plane ticket. He followed me to Perth, from a town
he'd sworn never to leave, and gave up everything in the process.
He works at a mine now and, even though he's away for weeks at a
time, we've never been happier.
