Hey men, women hate your flirting voice11:57AM, Apr 23, 2014
There are certain tactics men and women use in the subtle art of seduction – body language, eye contact and the sound of their voice.
New research from Albright College in Pennsylvania claims women should definitely get their ‘sexy voice’ on when flirting. Men, on the other hand, should definitely not.
The study was published in the Journal of Nonverbal Behaviour, and involved men and women attempting to “speak as if they were trying to impress someone with whom they were romantically interested”. AKA flirting. We’re cringing at the thought of it.
Women were awesome at it – making their voices all low and husky and sexy-like. The guys ate it up, associating a sexy voice with a hot body and face (an observation we’ve seen pop up repeatedly over the years). Susan Hughes, associate professor of psychology at Albright College (and the brains behind the study), says, “There is a stereotype of what is a sexual voice in our culture – a low, breathy voice”.
Yep, just like Scarlett Johansson’s.
But when it came to the men’s turn, their attempted ‘sexy voices’ were a big, fat fail on the flirting front. Women just weren’t into it.
The study did however find that women “place an emphasis on a prospective mate’s earning potential”. Read: they’re into men who sound rich. The feminist cause is very disappointed right now.
So how are men supposed to make themselves sound rich? Apparently, confidence is key. The men whose voices sounded the most confident were the most attractive to the opposite sex.
Sex and relationship coach Isiah McKimmie agrees with the findings, “A person’s voice is very important when it comes to the art of seduction, because we convey so much more in our tone than in the words themselves.”
Time to warm up those vocal chords, ladies. Men, not so much.
