Could these creepy sex dolls help stop child sexual abuse?

Just because a person is pedophilically inclined doesn't mean he is a danger.

Shin Takagi has been making realistic child sex dolls (who "do not perform sexual intercourse") for over a decade in the hopes that they will help paedophiles control their impulses and channel them through the dolls, The Atlantic* reports.

Takagi says he's struggled for a long time with his own paedophilic impulses but has never acted on them. He credits this to his company, Trottla, which produces sex dolls of girls as young as 5 years old. While Dr. Peter Fagan from the John Hopkins School of Medicine says he thinks the dolls could further reinforce a paedophile’s urges and make them even more interested in acting on the urges in real life, Takagi says he thinks they could really help paedophiles keep their urges limited to the dolls alone. Here's why.

1.** A Mayo Clinic meta-analysis found that treatments like castration and therapy don't change the paedophile’s sexual attraction to children, suggesting that giving paedophiles another outlet for their urges if those methods don't work is definitely worth a shot.

2.** Dr. Michael Seto from the University of Toronto says that while some paedophiles will see the dolls as further motivation to harm children, some might view them as "a safer outlet for their sexual urges, reducing the likelihood that they would seek out child pornography or sex with real children," adding that the theory is definitely worth further study.

3. Dr. Klaus Beier, a scientist at paedophile-prevention network Don't Offend, says that while certain people are inclined toward paedophilia, he's researching whether or not some of them are able to control the behaviour. Dr. Beier adds, "Just because a person is paedophilically inclined doesn't mean he is a danger."

4.** Takagi says he receives letters from "doctors, prep school teachers — even celebrities" all the time saying, "Thanks to your dolls, I can keep from committing a crime," suggesting that if those people are telling the truth and it has kept them from hurting children, then the dolls could be helping people as we speak.
