Ah January, that (totally not) awesome time of the year where we head back to reality post-holidays and assess our health and fitness situation. Our verdict? A few too many fruit mince pies were consumed and a little too much time was spent couch-side watching the cricket.
But fear not – we’ve found a fun way to get your health back on track. And before you roll your eyes at us - no, it doesn’t involve eating lettuce for a month, or even looking at your joggers. All you have to do is have sex. In fact, a long sex session burns almost as many calories as a 30 minute jog. True story.
The clever peeps at University of Quebec in Canada have discovered that sex is actually an awesome way to burn energy. Happy dance
The researchers asked 21 heterosexual couples aged between 18 and 35 to have sex once a week for a month (those poor things…). The couples also had to jog on a treadmill for half an hour while their calorie expenditure was monitored.
Surprisingly – and this is where it gets interesting – they found that for women, sex burnt 3.2 calories per minute compared with 7.1 when on the treadmill. So while it doesn’t burn calories like running does, sex is still a pretty damn good way to get your heart rate up. A choice between running and sex? We’ll take sex, please!
During their sex sessions, the researchers found that couples we’re engaging in “moderate intensity” exercise – think cycling or a match of tennis. Yes, really. Moderate exercise all taking place in the comfort of your bedroom; does it get any better?!
And according to sex and relationship expert Isiah McKimmie, the benefits of sex don’t end with your fitness.
“Sex really is great exercise because it burns calories and tones muscles while giving you a cardio workout,” explains Isiah. “But it can also reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke and boosts your immune system. Surprisingly, there’s also research to support that it can improve your hair and nail health and reduce your risk of osteoporosis,” explains Isiah.
So, to get the most out of your sexercise (see what we did there?) it’s important to try positions where you’re on top.
“When a woman is on top, she’s controlling the movements and is also using her leg muscles. Try the cowgirl or reverse cowgirl position for a good workout,” explains Isiah.
