Forget sexting, this year’s must-try, pant-dropping trends range from personalised vibrators to pin-porn. Seriously. Here’s what’s going on in the bedroom:
Time to get kinky. The sex toy industry owes a lot to 50 Shades of Grey. According to Sexyland adult store, they enjoyed a 35 percent increase in sales over summer as everyone raced to get their Anastasia Steele on and the trend shows no signs of slowing, with loads of couples wanting their own red room of pain. Sexyland’s rep has said, “I think the books have encouraged women to be more open about their sex lives.”
They aren’t the only ones cashing in on the kink fest with Jimmyjane (who make vibrators and awesome candles that melt into massage oil) reporting a “spike in sales” across their full product range – and they’re crediting 50 Shades:
"These novels are accelerating the progress of vibrators and other accessories into the mainstream, and are igniting imaginations around the world," said Jimmyjane chief creative Ethan Imboden.
The lesson? Get to an adult store and grab some hand cuffs, whips and blindfolds.
Pin your porn. There’s something really satisfying about building a Pinterest moodboard (which is why we’re all addicts at Cosmo). But do you know what it lacks? A place to collect all your fave sexy-time pics from the web. Having a pornboard might not complete you as a person, but there is obvs a major demand. Snatchly, a site which is basically Pinterest for porn, signed up 15,000 users in under two months when it launched last year. We’re not so sure it’ll be as female-centric (read: female-friendly) as the original Pinterest, but it’s worth trying if you're a porn-lover with poor organisational skills.
Multi-tasking vibrators. Judging by the new gadgets on the market, we’re all obsessed with having pimped-out technology that comes with a zillion features. That’s why it was only a matter of time before we started getting sex toys that could do WAY more than make you scream the house down. Forget The Rabbit (it’s so 2005), now it’s all about fancy-schmancy designs and unique extras. Exhibit A: the We-Vibe 3 is totally waterproof and has both a wireless remote control and charger base that doubles as a discreet storage case.
But if you still like your vibrator to serve one purpose, and one purpose only – to make you orgasm – that doesn’t mean you need some giant throbbing (not so pretty) dildo. Nope, the latest gadgets focus on discrete designs and – we never thought we’d say this about sex toys – elegance. Don’t believe us? Check out the award-winning Leaf (which looks just like its name) or any design by Nordic brand Lelo. They’re Swedish so of course their vibrators are super chic. But if you like cutesy objects then the Sweet Cakes Cupcake Vibrator by Shiri Zinn is one toy you can hide in plain sight. Want to know why? Just look at it!
3D-printed sex toys. Welcome to the future! You can now design, and have made, your own kinky things that hit your G-Spot just how you like it. If you have zero creative skills, websites like New York-based Makerlove and Dongiverse have templates to help you on your sexy way. According to design news site, Dezeen, some 3D-printing execs have called the boom in DIY sex toys a serious phenomenon.
Sharing your fantasies. With the success of lady erotica, everyone’s turning their hand to writing their own fantasy-fuelled sex romps. A new survey by Cliterati has found women aren’t afraid to share what makes them hot, and have others read about it! It’s time to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) because you could be penning the next sexy block-buster. Share your masterpiece on sites like Cliterati and Clean Sheets.
