Jet-set hair
Do some prep work
"Whether you're heading north or south, a change in climate can really dry out your hair," says hairstylist Ashley Javier. Apply a deep-conditioning treatment before you go so your hair has some extra moisture reserves to draw on when you're on the go. Just leave it on for 20 minutes while you pack.
Call a truce with your natural texture
You should spend your time kicking back, not stressing about unruly curls. "You can look great using nothing more than conditioner and black elastic," says India Hicks, creative partner at Crabtree & Evelyn, who lives in the Bahamas. Hicks simply combs a light cream conditioner through her long wavy locks when they're damp and ties them back in a low ponytail. If your hair is coarse, stylist Ted Gibson recommends choosing a protein-derived conditioner to calm it down before you pull it back.
Stay sleek
If you're frizz-prone and going to a humid locale, do what flight attendant Debra Coleman does when she flies to South America: comb a silicone serum through your hair before landing.
Loosen up
Holidays are about fun, not perfection, so when you're hitting the town at night, try playful variations on classic styles. Instead of doing a prim and polished chignon, toss your brush aside and use your fingers to rake your hair into a low pony. Twist it into a messy knot and secure with a few pins for a chic but not done effect. Tie a ribbon to make a headband, and pull wisps out for a flirty touch.
Pack protection
You'll probably be spending more time outside than you usually do, and with any luck, the sun will be shining. Guard your hair against those strand-parching, colour-fading rays with a leave-in treatment infused with UV filters, says Gibson. (A hat never hurts either!) If your hair is straightened, be particularly diligent about protection because it's even more prone to breakage in the sun.
Mighty minis
You might stock your bathroom in bulk (you'll kick that budget-sized shampoo eventually), but when you're on the road, think small.
Silky Skin
Get glowing
Want to get that bronzed vacation radiance before you've even unpacked your bikini? Apply self-tanner the day before you hop on a plane, train or automobile. You'll arrive at your destination with a sexy (and safe) tan.
Hydrate, hydrate
We all know planes suck the moisture right out of your skin, but any travel is taxing your complexion. A good moisturising mask goes a long way toward keeping it in shape. And for every hour that you're in the air, drink 250mL of water. If that's too hard, try eating water-dense foods like lettuce, cucumber and watermelon.
Scrub up
To stay silky (without schlepping a lot), snag a few sugar packets from the airplane drink cart or roadside cafe. "White sugar is all I use to exfoliate," says celebrity make-up artist Carmindy. "After you cleanse, massage a little over your face and lips while they're still damp. Sugar slowly melts in water, so it will gently slough away dead skin without causing irritation."
Safeguard your skin
You're already protecting your hair from the sun, but more important is your skin. Slather sunscreen on any exposed areas, and reapply every three hours.
Make-up to go
Clean up your brows
With groomed arches (done by a pro, if possible), you look polished even without a speck of make-up on, so you can skimp on your regular regimen while you're away.
Blend liquid shimmer into your foundation
"It's the easiest way to get vacation sparkle without sun damage," says Carmindy, who puts a few drops of Benefit Moon Beam, into her foundation, and shakes it up. To do this one dose at a time, mix a dollop that's one quarter shimmer, three-quarters foundation.
Pack a palette
"Pack a palette," says make-up artist Carol Shaw. They're already colour-coordinated for creating different looks.
Embrace cotton buds
Cotton buds are perfect for applying eye-shadow, blending eye-liner, and erasing smudges. The only brush you'll need to pack is for your blush. If you want to get creative, soak the cotton buds in lavender-scented make-up remover, and seal them in a zip-top bag before you leave. That way, you can fix make-up goofs on the go — and the lavender will have a bonus calming effect.
Carry a highlighter
We mean the kind for your face, not for your reading material. Make-up highlighters adds bright light to your complexion and soften any flaws, says Shaw. Best of all, you can use just one all over. Tap a cream highlighter stick under your brows, on the inside corners of your eyes, and on the tops of your cheekbones. Avoid the T zone though, since the glimmering particles will accentuate any shine.
To ensure nothing in your cosmetics kit explodes during the flight, squeeze air from all bottles before you seal them.
