Bachelor in Paradise: Jake and Megan didn’t break up and they’re definitely in love!

“I’d happily say now that I’m in love.”

By: Katie Stow

We've finally reached the epic conclusion of Bachelor in Paradise, with the last episode seeing the remaining four couples head in to their commitment ceremonies: The tumultuous Keira and Jarrod, the unexpected (but adorable) Tara and Sam, the too-good-looking-for-TV Megan and Jake, and the oh-so-serious international lovers, Ali and Grant.

Whilst we were not prepared for the surprise proposal from Sam to Tara, we were equally as shocked to see Megan and Jake seemingly call it quits before the final commitment ceremony, deciding that they weren't ready to take that next step.

We definitely thought that meant that Jake and Megan were over for good, but after chatting to Jake today, we were chuffed to find out that they are not only still together, but also in love!

Find out what happened between filming the finale and right now, as well as what this loved-up couple have in store for the future.

Can you talk me through that final conversation with Megan in Paradise?

It was definitely hard. As you could see from what they showed, I was a little bit emotional. I guess because of when it happened in Paradise it could have potentially been a goodbye between Megan and I. But it wasn't just Megan's decision — we did have a conversation off-camera before that break up scene where we discussed that we were ready for the commitment ceremony, and we needed a bit more time. Just saying those three words, saying 'I love you', we had a lot more of a wait on that than the other couples. We just wanted to do things on our own terms, have no pressure, and see how we went in the real world.

The way it was cut on the show made it seem like more of a break up, so was that the end of you and Megan?

No, definitely not. It was just that we weren't ready to commit, so rather than just doing it for the sake of it and putting more pressure on ourselves, we just thought it would be best to do it this way. We were falling in love with each other, but we just wanted more time.

How did you feel when Megan said she wanted to leave before the commitment ceremony?

It was still hard to go through, but it was something that we had agreed on together.

It's unfortunate that we didn't really get to see that. It was more of a nearly break-up, with a somewhat random kiss at the end.

[Laughs] Obviously it's been edited! Megan did have her concerns throughout the whole of Paradise and we had been through a lot — we were definitely tested a lot more than the other couples, but at the end of it we left the show on our own terms, and we've been together for more than four months now!

So you're officially together?!

Yeah, she's sitting right next to me right now!

Megan: Hello!

We left to see how we'd go, and we were apart for a few weeks, but after that we just went from strength to strength, and I'd happily say now that I'm in love—and we've definitely said that to each other.

Thank you so much! I guess we haven't actually announced it yet [Laughs]. But we're off to Thailand tonight for our own little holiday to get away from everything. Our own little Paradise where we can have some time for ourselves. We fly at 8:30 tonight!

So what happened between filming ending and now?

The first couple of weeks was trying, because we were still talking about the conversations we were having in Paradise, and we were apart for a little bit. But then Megan came and visited me in the Gold Coast, and it just sort of hit us both in the face. It was very much real. For us, Paradise was just the starting point, and we went through some real-life tests, but made the decision that was right at the time — which, in the long run, was the best for us.

We haven't made plans or anything, we're just taking each day as it comes. We're both very easy-going people, which I think is why we mesh so well together. Plus, she's hot!

So how's the long distance relationship going? (Jake lives in the Gold Coast and Megan lives in WA)

So when we left Paradise, Megan was meant to be doing a lot of travel, but that didn't end up happening. She was still away for a month, which was hard because we missed each other — but I guess that surprising feeling made us more sure. Megan is still travelling around a lot — she's pretty much living out of a suitcase at the moment! So we have had time apart, but also a lot of time together. We're just taking it as it comes! We spend as much time as we can when we're with each other, so we do what we can.

Have you met each other's families yet?

Megan did meet some of my family when she was in the Gold Coast, but I haven't met her family yet. I'm excited to, when that happens! Everything's just been so crazy the last couple weeks with the show — but after Thailand, hopefully I get to meet her family.

Let's see if we survive Thailand first! It's our first little trip shut off from everyone, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. I think we're going to go go-karting or something — which I'm obviously going to win...

Megan: No way!

But, yeah, I'm really excited.

What's the process with the rings in Paradise? Does production help you pick them out?

Honestly, I have no idea. Because Megan and I didn't get to that part. There was nothing pre-picked, but they did measure our ring finger.

Megan: They didn't do mine!

I guess we weren't privy to that! But the couples got a promise ring at the end, but honestly I'm not too sure.

Did you think anyone was going to actually propose?

I actually spoke with Sam before he proposed. He just told me, 'I'm going to propose to Tara,' and my reaction was pretty shocked! So I knew it happened, but had no idea how it played out.

What advice did you give him?

I was honestly so shocked! I was like, 'Wow, I can't believe you're actually going to do that!' But I was one of Sam and Tara's biggest fans, so you could see why it would happen. I really hope it lasts. Megan and I were watching it back last night, and it was emotional watching it because we really care about these people. Watching it back was just beautiful.

Even watching our little break up scene brings things back. It was super emotional because at the time I had no idea whether that was going to be goodbye, or if there was going to be a future. What you saw was real emotion. I was quite upset.

If you and Megan were in the same position as Tara and Sam, would you have proposed?

No, no. There's a lot more of a wait in even saying 'I love you,' let alone taking that kind of leap in a relationship. And Megan's the same. I'm pretty sure if I got down on one knee and asked her, she would just laugh at me. I guess we just weren't at that point. We were tested a lot, but we try to keep a real world perspective. But everyone's different!

Did you feel hard done by all the shit thrown at you and Megan in Paradise?

At times it was like, 'Wow. What are they going to throw at us next?' You know, we really felt from the start with Florence, and then Thomas, and then Florence coming back in, and a few other things — but I feel like it was good for us. At the time it sucked and we were like, 'What have we done to these people?!' [Laughs] But it definitely made us stronger coming out of the bubble.

Do you feel like you had a harsh edit on Bachelor in Paradise?

Look, it is what it is. Obviously the drama is played up, and there were a few sneaky edits in some things that I said, but I have to own that. I know that I didn't handle that situation the best and I could have done things differently, but now I feel like I've made up for it. It showed the real me as the show went on, and I wore my heart on my sleeve. I wish I could go back and handle things differently, but I can't, so I just have to learn from it.

But if you could go back and change one thing, what would it be?

It would be how I handled things when Megan came in. At the end of the day, I didn't want to hurt anyone. I wouldn't change my decision— I would never change that because of what I have now — but I would just have handled things differently and not cracked under the pressure so much. But it's hard, it's a pressure cooker situation.

Did anything not make the final cut that you wish had?

Yes, there was so much — not just from mine and Megan's story — but from everyone else's too. We were filming 24 hours a day for a month, so there were a lot more fun moments, mucking around that didn't make it to air. Megan and I actually had another two single dates that no one saw. It wasn't just one date and then all of a sudden we were at that point. We had three different dates and then our fantasy date. So there are things that you didn't get to see — like that I made Megan a homemade date card, with a bottle of champagne, that said 'I owe you one date on the outside'. But stuff like that didn't make the cut, which is a shame, but I guess they've got to make a show!
There's so many couples, and so many story lines, that I reckon they could make two more seasons out of the footage they shot with us.

What are your thoughts on the queerbaiting tactics used in the show's promos?

I wasn't a fan of it, I didn't really like it. I know it didn't sit well with Megan, and that was hard. Megan and I have been together the whole time the show's been on, and it was hard to see her upset about that. She wasn't in control of how it was promoted.

Was she told it would be cut like that?

No, we didn't know. We just saw the promos as they came out. She just really didn't want to let down the LGBTQI+ community. Obviously that's a part of who she is, and something I will always respect and appreciate, but at the end of the day that doesn't affect our relationship. She's with me.

Were you concerned when Elora came in?

No, not at all. It didn't even cross my mind, actually! I think I made fun of Megan because of it, saying, "Your girl crush came in and asked me on a date!" But it didn't affect me whatsoever. It didn't even cross my mind in Paradise, but I guess that's just a reflection of who I am.

What are you plans for the future?

We want to do a lot of travel. Megan does a lot of travel, and that's something that I've always wanted to do — so we're just going to take it as it comes. Whatever happens, happens! We haven't really made plans past Thailand, but we want to spend time with each other and keep going how we're going. Without sounding too corny, I'm really grateful I went on this show, otherwise this wouldn't have happened.

If you were given the chance to do a spin-off show about you and Megan, would you do it?

That's definitely not on my, or Megan's, mind. But if someone said we could do a show, I know it would be fun! But it's the last thing on our minds right now!
