It’s been more than seven months since the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars, so if you’ve forgotten a few details about what went down in that abandoned school for the blind, you’re not alone. It’s especially hard to remember anything from that episode besides Noel Kahn’s decapitated head rolling down a staircase, an image that takes up quite a bit of brain space next to things as dull as “Paige got jealous.” In anticipation of the season 7B premiere — the first of the show’s last 10 episodes ever — here’s a quick refresher on everything you need to remember as you roll into the final stretch of the most complicated teen murder mystery there ever was.
Of all the Liars, Spencer had perhaps the most eventful half-season. She ended things with Caleb and started things with Marco, all while harbouring lingering emotions for Toby, who moved on with Yvonne. In the climactic battle of the summer finale, Spencer got shot, and going into the midseason premiere, her fate is unknown. It certainly looked like Jenna shot her, but since Jenna probably wasn’t the only other villain in the school, it could have been someone else.
The most important Spencer plot point, however, is the revelation that Mary Drake is her mother. If this is true, then Spencer is at least a half-sibling with Charlotte DiLaurentis, aka CeCe Drake. The Liars know that Mary had another child while in Radley, who should be about their age, but Mary is hardly trustworthy, so this mystery may still be unsolved. Also, Veronica Hastings is a goddess and I want her to be Spencer’s biological mother very, very badly.
Aria almost eloped with Ezra, but then they decided to wait so he could go to Colombia and find out whether or not his ex-girlfriend Nicole was still alive. Things are not looking good for the couple that never should have been, because as of “The DArkest Knight,” Ezra hadn’t returned to Rosewood, and Aria saw him kissing Nicole on television. You know what that means! It’s time to call Jason DiLaurentis, the man with the silkiest hair in the entire state of Pennsylvania, and beg for him to take you back into his muscular, unbuttoned henley-covered arms.
After Hanna broke things off with her fancy fiancé whose name I can’t even remember and refuse to look up because it’s not Caleb, she got back together with Caleb, who delivered a beautiful speech about how she’s the only person he wants to be with for the rest of his life. They also had sex in front of a crackling fire, as you do.
Unfortunately, the rest of Hanna’s life is not quite as rosy. She took it upon herself to kidnap Noel Kahn and torture him for proof that he committed about 4,324 crimes, and also took some of his blood for a DNA test to see if he was the second child of Mary Drake. Mona, Rosewood’s resident criminal mastermind, helped Hanna out of this jam and told her she already had enough evidence against Noel, but then he (1) got beheaded and (2) tested negative for any relation to Mary Drake. You win some kidnappings, you lose some kidnappings.
You may remember Emily as “the one who left her phone upstairs in the murder school,” thus causing the Liars to get separated and all hell to break loose. Way to go, Emily. Aside from the fact that she’s still being stalked by Uber A, Emily’s situation is relatively comfortable for the moment. Her ex-girlfriend Paige is back in town and trying to get back together with her, but she may as well give that up because #Emison is forever.
Alison just cannot catch a break. Her now-dead fiancé Elliott Rollins turned out to be a guy named Archer Dunhill, who was holding her prisoner in a hospital and working in tandem with her aunt to make her think she was hallucinating. She’s also pregnant with his child, which makes very little sense, timing-wise, but just go with it. After confessing this to Emily, her one true friend 'til the end, Ali kissed Emily. Is #Emison endgame? I don’t know, but I do think they should do a blood test just to triple-check they’re not related. You never know in Rosewood.
Other Lingering Mysteries
Who tortured Hanna in the barn?
Hanna believed that Noel, who helped CeCe torture the Liars in the dollhouse, was also the wielder of the cattle prod, but she never got proof of that. So was it A.D., or someone else? Just how many people does Hanna know who might be interested in holding her prisoner in a torture barn?
Is Spencer’s mum really Mary Drake?
Mary definitely had a second child but the only evidence for that child being Spencer is Mary’s word. Birth certificate or it didn’t happen.
If not, who is Mary Drake’s other child?
It’s definitely not Noel, so who is it? Or what if Spencer really is Mary’s kid, but the second child was actually twins, and there’s another Spencer running around out there? Am I still writing in English?
Is Toby dead?
Toby was last seen in a fiery car crash with Yvonne. One or both of them is sure to be dead, given the sombre goodbye Toby shared with Spencer before he left on this ill-fated trip to Maine. Related: Who caused this car crash? It cannot have been an accident.
Who killed Charlotte DiLaurentis?
Charlotte’s murder is supposedly the reason behind all of Uber A’s machinations, but we still don’t know who actually did it. The Liars thought it was Ali, but it wasn’t, and Uber A thinks the Liars know, but they don’t. So who does know? Mrs. Grunwald, probably. Has anyone asked her?
Where is Jenna?
It seemed like Jenna was working with Uber A, but then Uber A abducted her at the end of the summer finale. Jenna claimed her recent nefarious activities were on behalf of Charlotte, who was her friend, so it seems like she and Uber A should be on the same side. Why aren’t they, and where is she now?
Who is Uber A, aka A.D.?
A mystery that will likely remain unsolved until the last millisecond of the show.
