Ruby Rose, the Australian model and DJ, may be easily recognisable on home shores, but overseas it’s a different story. It’s that much more impressive then that her new social video, Break Free, has gone viral – picking up over 250,000 YouTube views and 125,000 shares on Facebook.
The short film, she explains is, “about gender roles, Trans, and what it is like to have an identity that deviates from the status quo.”
Rose is engaged to Roald Dahl’s granddaughter Phoebe Dahl, and was previously engaged to Aussie model Catherine McNeil. She recently admitted she doesn’t see herself as male or female, but identifies as being ‘gender fluid’.
The video begins with a dolled up Rose in a bandage dress, long blonde hair and plenty of makeup. She begins cutting her hair off at the bathroom mirror before dying it black, revealing her current hairstyle beneath the blonde.
She’s well known for her ink, but it’s not until she begins washing the layer of body makeup off that you realise she’s covered it up for the clip. The model posted a status on Facebook about the clip too:
“You know what needs to stop just as much as homophobia, bullying within the LGBT Community... A 'bisexual' isnt just greedy.. 'Pansexual' exists and isnt a cop out.. 'Straight' people can be huge gay advocates and blessings to the community... you can identify as trans without surgery, you can be gender fluid... infact guess what... you can be whoever you are and like whoever you like and WE should spread the love and acceptance we constantly say we dont receive. I will delete any inter fan/follower bullying.. because it's so backwards and does not belong on my page.”
She also reminds viewers that the film can be watched the same way backwards and still have just as much meaning. Ruby is inspiring people who struggle with gender identity all over the world, and with a video as powerful as this, we hope her work makes a positive change.
