Selena Gomez has revealed she underwent chemotherapy

“That's what my break was really about.”

Poor Selena Gomez has had a rough year. Aside from her breakup with with Justin Bieber, she’s also been the subject of some pretty horrific body shaming, admitting earlier this week that she is in therapy over online comments that have been made about her. And even worse than all of the above, she’s now revealed she’s also been suffering from a serious illness.

In an interview in the new issue of Billboard magazine, Selena says that she was diagnosed with lupus and went through chemo as part of her treatment of the disease.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy. That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke."

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can vary in severity. Skin inflammation, pain and even organ and tissue damage can be caused as a result of the immune system attacking the body’s healthy cells and tissues. In some cases chemotherapy drugs are used to treat severe forms of lupus, as they reduce the activity of the immune system.

"I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're assholes.' I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again," Selena went on to explain, breaking our hearts.

But she’s not letting that anger and frustration ruin her, instead she’s channelling it into her work and concentrating on her music.

"I'm so f--king nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I've been working since I was 7. I've been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story," she told the mag.

"The hate motivated me," she went on. “This is my time. I've deserved this. I earned it. This is all me."

If that’s not girl power, we don’t know what is.
