Lena Dunham is best known for creating the ridiculously raw series Girls and has now been applauded for becoming a strong feminist voice in Hollywood, but this week she got seriously personal and we couldn't be prouder.
Lena took to Instagram this week to share not one, not two, but three completely nude pictures of herself. The photos had her literally laid bare and she was wearing no makeup and had her hair casually tied back in a half bun.
This is a pretty left-of-field move for Lena, who prefers to keep things witty and very much clothed on Instagram. But the actress explains why she shared these photos in her heartfelt caption:
"Today is National Leathercraft Day, National Relaxation Day and National Lemon Merengue Pie Day. It's also the 9 month anniversary of my hysterectomy. I've never celebrated the 9 month anniversary of anything and I realized last night why that number feels so funny — I won't ever do it the way I planned to. My body is mostly healed and every day I find a new bruise on my heart, but today I offer myself gratitude: from the most pained place, I somehow knew to choose myself. The purest glint of who we are and know we can be is always available to us, calm and true at our center. My friend Paul named my uterus Judy, and when she was being uppity we called her out, hence the tattoo on my ribs, which hurt like fuck even through the pain meds: #RIPJudy. Today I give thanks for Judy, for her graceful exit and for this body, which is stronger than I've ever given it credit for. Happy Giving Birth To Myself Day."
Lena has been vocal in the past about her battle with endometriosis and the chronic pain it has caused her. Her total hysterectomy (which saw 'Judy' removed) was performed in the hope that it'll give her body a break from the painful symptoms of endo — which affects a hell of a lot of women, FYI.
Since sharing the post on Instagram, Lena has received a lot of support from fans and girls that have gone through a similar situation alike. Comments included loving notes like, "Grieving and thriving and acceptance can all coexist, and Lena, you have never been more beautiful," and, "Your strength and self love coupled with your raw honesty look fantastic on you! You are sharing something that so many people are pulling from. Thank you!"
Here's hoping that Lena recovers fully from her operation and can crack on with her healthy body from here on out.
