Netflix's end-of-year stats reveal how ~normal~ your TV binge-watching habits are

Cheated on your S.O. with a show? Same.

By: Jessica Chandra

As we approach the end of the year, everyone’s starting to release their end-of-year wrap-ups as we celebrate 2017. (What a time.) (But also, where did this year go? For real.)

Netflix, our go-to for TV binging, has done the same, and the streaming service has shared stats on things like the shows people ~devoured~, AKA binged in one go, and the shows people ~savoured~, AKA watched at a more leisurely pace. And to be quite honest, we were a little surprised at the results.

While most content on Netflix is designed to be binged, there are a few shows that have ‘heavier’ content that’s hard to watch episode-after-episode without a break. The data also revealed which shows brought people together (as in the shows that you had to watch unless you wanted to be excluded from the conversation), and the shows that people ‘cheated’ on their S.O. with (the ones you said you’d watch with your BF but then secretly watched alone).

Here are the most interesting stats.

The most ‘devoured’ show of 2017

The #1 show that people binged (spent more than two hours a day watching) was Greenleaf, which came as a surprise. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life came in at #4, while 13 Reasons Why placed #5, and Riverdale was #7.

The most ‘savoured’ show of 2017

The #1 show that people savoured (spent less than two hours a day watching) was The Crown — which is binge-worthy, but we can see why people would want to spread out the viewing experience.

The most ‘cheat-worthy’ show of 2017

If your S.O. promised they’d wait to watch Orange Is the New Black without you, and then went behind your back and binged it, you are not alone. OITNB was the #1 ‘cheatworthy’ show in 2017. Most people obviously CBF waiting to watch Narcos (#2), Stranger Things (#3), 13 Reasons Why (#4), Riverdale (#5) and The Crown (#8) either. You snooze, you lose.

The most ‘watched together’ shows of 2017

At the same time, there were plenty of shows that people kind of turned into ‘events’ and watched together. Top of the list was Stranger Things (#1), followed by 13 Reasons Why (#2) and Riverdale (#3). And this isn’t too surprising — these are the shows that everyone becomes obsessed with, so if you’re not part of the conversation when it’s happening, then you’re kind of not part of it at all (harsh, but true).

Given that most of these shows will have new seasons coming in 2018, take note so you’re not left behind next year. Or watch at your own pace if you like — you do you.
