This is the ideal age gap in a relationship

And it's not what you might think.

Growing up we were always told it was better to date older guys because they’re ‘more mature’ than baes our own age. The idea was that men develop slower than women (still, LOL) and that you would have a better chance of everlasting lurve if you both had similar values, which all boiled down to age - or so the story goes.

Since then, we’ve taken the whole thing with a pinch of salt, but have been left wondering just how big of a deal the age difference thing really is, if at all. Now, it seems one study could have the answer and age might be more than just a number.

A study from the Emory University in Atlanta looked at 3,000 people and found that couples with a larger age gap were more likely to break up.

Relationships with a one-year age difference were found to be optimal, ending in the lowest divorce rate of all (3%) and, as the age gap got higher, so did the risk of divorce.

A five-year difference meant the chances went up to 18% and, when the age went up to ten years, the chances of divorce similarly doubled. For couples braggin’ a 20-year gap, things don’t look promising at all with the risk of divorce rising up to 95%.

While it’s important to keep in mind that this is just a study, rather than the ‘be all and end all’ truth, they found the trend was consistent across the sample, indicating partners were best suited if they were in the same 'life stage'. Of course, things like behaviour, children and sheer compatibility also have a big bearing on a couple’s longevity. So there's that too.

One of the study’s researchers, Hugo Mialon, added, "it could just be that the types of couples with those characteristics are the types of couples who are, on average, more likely to divorce for other reasons."

So, basically, there could be more to the age gap thing than we first thought but if you and your bae DGAF about graduating high school in different years, then that's the most important thing of all.
