Finding the right foundation for your skin tone is hard. It requires a little bit of know how – first, find out if your undertones warm or cool – and a whole lot of trial and error. And the struggle is even more real if you have dark skin as there are far less shades to choose from.
Beauty blogger Nyma Tang is documenting her struggle to find her perfect foundation in a YouTube series called ‘The darkest shade’. As you can probably guess, she trials a whole bunch of popular foundations in the darkest shade possible.
So far, Nyma has tested a whole host of popular foundations from brands including NYX, Anastasia Beverly Hills, NARS, Makeup Forever and Bobbi Brown.
During her review of Maybelline’s FIT Me foundation, she points out that the brand have recently extended the range of shades available for this popular product. “I guess they just extended their shades to go darker and lighter,” she said. This is a small win for women and men of colour. But the Texas-based beauty blogger found the new, darker shades really hard to find. She went on a self-confessed rant about the issue:
“I am going to go on a little bit of a rant right now because I am so frustrated at the lengths that I had to go to get my hands on this foundation. Especially for it being a drugstore foundation.
“Drugstore makeup is usually found in a drugstore but this was really frustrating. I don’t know whose fault it is. I don’t know if it’s on Walmart’s end. I don’t know if it’s on the makeup company’s end but someone needs to get it together because it was really, really frustrating. It’s really frustrating when the darker shades of certain makeup aren’t available in all the stores. You can kind of tell which store is going to have it depending on demographic… I really don’t think it should be like that. It really bothers me.”
Nyma is highlighting a serious problem within the beauty industry. Watch more of her reviews below:
